  • Epidemiology: Understanding Global Health

    What does epidemiology study? How does a pandemic start? How does mathematics allow us to calculate the risk of such an occurrence? How do vaccines provide protection and how safe are they? Is it possible to predict and prevent future epidemics?

    During the course, students take on multiple roles. They become epidemiologists, researchers, microbiologists and even public health policy-makers, in order to investigate scientific data, examine cases of pandemics that have occurred in the past, study the epidemiological course of infectious diseases, learn about the most dangerous microorganisms for our health, and seek new ways to prevent and treat, always based on science and technology.

    The purpose of such activities is to offer students a holistic understanding of the concept of health and how it connects to social and environmental factors. In addition, students become familiar with different research tools that are being used in the above areas and have the opportunity to develop their analytical and critical thinking skills on important issues concerning public and individual health.

    Foundations of Psychology

    Can you measure happiness or anger? How do brain functions, our cognition, the environment and our personality interact to shape who we are? Can you gain all this knowledge in three weeks? Foundations of Psychology gives students the opportunity to establish connections between factors that determine our behavior and wellbeing. Students learn how to conduct research and gather data, in order to measure emotions, behaviors, and cognition. A holistic approach to human behavior is utilized, combining the understanding of how the brain, hormones and genetics influence behaviors, along with the impact of the environment.  Experimentation, hands-on activities and role-play, as well as debates and heated discussions will provide students with a thorough understanding of the foundations of the most important fields of Psychology. The course also focuses on abnormal psychology, one of the areas that most students are especially interested in. Mental health disorders, their symptoms, causes and management are introduced from a critical point of view.

    • Demonstrate knowledge on research methods and biological psychology, such as brain anatomy, hormone regulation and genetics.
    • Experiment with memory and thinking games, to determine the role of cognition in behavior. 
    • Critically assess the role of the environment on development and wellbeing.
    • Research and review mental health disorders, their causes and management. 

    International Relations

    It’s the late 1800s and you are the leader of a European country: the Austrian Empire or the Kingdom of Prussia (Germany) or smaller but influential countries such as the Kingdom of Two Sicilies or Switzerland. What decisions will you make? This is your reality for the next three weeks, as you undertake the European Leadership Project, a simulation that focuses on Europe and its political, military, economic, and cultural developments from the end of the Napoleonic wars (1815) until the start of World War I (1914).

    As presidents, tsars, popes or dukes, you present your decisions, answer questions posed by your opponents, try to solicit support for your quest and tackle international crises, aiming to win the final vote. Through rigorous research and analysis of your own and your opponents’ decisions, you gain a broad understanding of the study of the origins of modern international politics, emphasizing on significant themes such as foreign policy and the role of great powers, superpowers, ethnic and religious movements and terrorist groups in the arena of international affairs. Among others, you focus on the relationship between constructivism and realism in International Relations, evaluate the importance of good relations between countries with respect to the economy and evaluate why the 1929 Geneva Conference was necessary.

    Learning Objectives

    • Develop cognitive skills such as primary source analysis, logical inferences, and map construction and interpretation.
    • Evaluate, synthesize and analyze key facts and ideas productively, to deepen your understanding of modern reality and the world issues which concern policymakers and citizens today.
    • Discuss and interpret key ideas in International Relations, such as the Security Dilemma, the contribution of nationalism to the rise of imperialism and totalitarian regimes. 

    Introduction to Java (Greek)

    This course introduces students to the Java programming language. It teaches them the basic concepts of computer programming and at the same time it presents to them the core ideas of Object-oriented programming.

    At the end of the course the students should be able to write complete Java programs that distinguish between java primitive and non-primitive data types, to incorporate basic programming constructs, like loops and branches, to understand and put in proper use important object-oriented programming concepts, like classes and objects, and to take advantage of Java built-in methods.

    Students are expected to be familiar with standard computer operations (e.g. login, cut & paste, email attachments, etc.) before enrolling in the course. For 8th grade students, it is recommended to have completed the ‘Introduction to Web Design’ course.

    Introduction to Web Design (Greek)

    This course introduces students to basic web design using HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). The course does not require any prior knowledge of HTML or web design. Throughout the course students are introduced to planning and designing effective web pages; implementing web pages by writing HTML and CSS code; enhancing web pages with the use of page layout techniques, text formatting, graphics, images, and multimedia; and producing a functional, multi-page website.

    Students should have a general background in using a computer, managing files, and a basic knowledge of the Internet. Students should also be able to navigate to and within a website using a web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari. Students do not need to purchase any software for this course.

    It is recommended that 5th & 6th grade students have completed the Scratch Middle School course.

    Medical Statistics

    Medical statistics is the contribution of mathematics to the interpretation of medical data. It gives answers to questions of great importance to our lives.

    “How accurate is a diagnostic test?”, “How effective is a particular drug?”, “Is exercise good for mental health?”, “Which cholesterol levels are considered healthy?” The current pandemic crisis is another example of how medical statistics dictate the course of action for maximum benefit.

    The course content will cover the basics of probabilities and descriptive statistics which are a requirement in order to carry on with more advanced mathematical instruments used by contemporary medical researchers, such as hypothesis testing, statistical power, error types, positive predictive value and regression.

    By the end of this course, students will be able to extract information from data by performing statistical analyses, identify biases and errors, understand medical research papers and identify the effect of distributions in everyday life.
